Life has been a little hectic for me lately ... not sure why really ... just too busy with too many different things! But I do like to try and squeeze in a little creativity even on the most busy of days. I find that I can pick up my doodle book and just do a bit each night in front of the TV.
Now, anyone who knows me will know that I don't really like the TV. It doesn't matter how many channels you have, there never seems to be anything good to watch, and on top of that I am also the most restless fidgety person, and find it very hard to sit still for longer than about 2 minutes. However, I am quite happy to sit in front of the TV whilst doing something else at the same time. And as an added bonus, my drawings are definitely better if I am not thinking about it too much. Over-thinking things is a killer.
This page in my doodle book, suggested drawing a face every day for a week. I started drawing on the plane on my recent trip to EuroDisney. I am not overly anxious when flying, but I do like to do something to stop my mind wandering off to a dark place, and start thinking about planes dropping out of the sky.... So, this one is a little wobbly (turbulence!), and was also done with limited resources.
But as I got into it, I really got into my stride, and found a quirky style of faces that I like!
Even over the course of doing just 7 faces I really feel like I improved my skills and that makes me happy!
Today, for the first time in 3 weeks, I have the house to myself and a day to catch up a bit, so off to do a few jobs, but maybe get the paints out later .... !
Oooh, Go you! Faces faces faces.... I'm on this journey too :) Loving your style :) x x x

ReplyDeleteThese are awesome and inspiring...can i ask what you used?
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha, I used a Stabile marks-all pencil for drawing the outlines. I love it, it is super dark! I added colour with prismacolor pencils which are wax-based pencils with high pigment (love them!) I added extra touches of colour with sharpie and Montana paint pens, and finally some highlights with a signo uni-ball. Kate x

ReplyDeleteand love this sentence :
"Over-thinking things is a killer."
and about this :
"Even over the course of doing just 7 faces I really feel like I improved my skills and that makes me happy!"
Our family went to see Black Violin at our local culture and concert venue. When they were asked by one student how much they practice (I am sure they get this question all the time!), their response was wonderful. They didn't set a time limit of playing this long every day, they just encouraged the kids to have fun and play everyday. The exact quote was, "If you play every day, you can't be worse than you were the day before" ... and isn't that great advice on SO many levels.
Loved seeing your work. Thanks for sharing.
Hello there Spirituncaged. Thanks for your response to my blog post and for sharing your experience. Yes, I think the advice of playing a little every day and having fun along the way is truly excellent advice, and applies to so much more than practising an instrument :-)

Coming to your blog is a little like coming home...I just love your style - so full of color and whimsy. What a great idea to do a face a day. I'm headed out of town on Sunday night for a week;s worth of "work training" and trying to figure out what to take to play with. Small journal with faces. Check. Great idea. See you around 21 Secrets.
